Inspired by the rise of virtual production techniques popularized by shows like The Mandalorian, our team undertook an internal R&D project to explore the potential of real-time environments using LED volumes and camera tracking.
We built a custom setup using an L-shaped LED wall and a tracked camera system powered by VR trackers, allowing us to render parallax-accurate backgrounds in real time via Unreal Engine. This setup enabled us to test virtual set extensions and lighting interactions on a small scale, simulating the kind of workflows used in high-end film and TV production.
My primary role was as an environment artist, creating several immersive 3D scenes within Unreal Engine tailored for the virtual stage. I also contributed to the technical setup, assisting with tracker calibration, LED configuration, and camera alignment. Additionally, I served as a stand-in actor for test shoots, helping to evaluate lighting, depth, and realism from the performer’s perspective.
